Accused Harasser Inquired: 'Yet What If I Might Be Madeleine?'
A female indicted with stalking Kate McCann allegedly recorded her a recorded message which asked: "suppose I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, 24, who witnesses stated has repeatedly claimed she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and her co-defendant are facing charges accused with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court was told phone records and data obtained from phones logged Ms Wandelt consistently requesting Madeleine's mother for a biological test during 2023 and 2024.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a family holiday in Portugal - is among the most publicized missing child cases and continues to be open.
'I Am Not Seeking Money'
One phone message, presented in court, documented Ms Wandelt declaring: "I know I'm overweight and unattractive like Madeleine used to be, but I believe what I know."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's recordings with Mrs McCann's recording said: "Suppose there is a small chance that I am she? What then? Isn't that crucial for you?"
"I am not seeking money, I possess a life here in Poland, I just want to discover," she added.
The panel was told that through electronic messages, mobile messages and calls, Ms Wandelt asked for a DNA test, sent early photographs to her phone in a attempt to demonstrate a resemblance to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and stated to have "memories" from a early life with the McCanns.
The investigator, an intelligence analyst with Leicestershire Police who collated the evidence, told the court there "didn't appear to be any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore reached out to close associates of the McCanns, based on the communication logs.
On that date, Mr McCann responded to a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "a wrong number."
During that incident Ms Wandelt left a voicemail on Mrs McCann's voicemail saying "I will persist and I plan to establish my position."
The court learned the co-defendant developed a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt preceding accompanying her on a visit to the McCanns' property in that area in that winter.
Call logs demonstrated Mrs Spragg had contacted via communication app to Mrs McCann to say the media had characterized Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she should be taken seriously in the period leading up to the trip to Rothley, Leicestershire, in December 2024.
The court heard communications between the two accused, in that autumn, considering attempting to obtain Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her bins or from silverware at a eating establishment.
"We have to make a stand," the co-defendant advised Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the appearance to their home, Mrs Spragg transmitted a text which said: "We find ourselves sat near the McCanns' residence with our headlights off resembling detectives. I wanted to accomplish this with Peter Andrew I never thought I would be involved in this with the McCanns."
The trial proceeds.
